Volunteer Position: Uprooted U Program

Position Title: Uprooted U Program Instructor
Duration: September to December, 2024; January to April, 2025
Location: FCJ Refugee Centre, 208 Oakwood Ave, York, ON M6E 2V4
Time Commitment: Availability during Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday

Role Description

The Youth Engagement Facilitator plays a pivotal role in a bridging program designed to provide educational classes and support to youth who are not enrolled in traditional school settings. This volunteer position focuses on creating a welcoming and enriching environment where youth can develop essential skills, explore interests, and build confidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate Learning Sessions: Lead or assist in facilitating educational classes.
  • Support Individual Learning: Provide one-on-one or small group support to help youth understand and complete assignments, projects, or activities. Offer guidance and encouragement to promote academic and personal growth.
  • Promote Positive Engagement: Foster a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where youth feel valued and encouraged to participate actively in learning activities. Promote respect, teamwork, and creativity among participants.
  • Monitor Progress and Attendance: Track participants’ progress, attendance, and engagement in program activities. Provide feedback to program coordinators regarding participants’ achievements and challenges.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Respect and celebrate diversity among participants, acknowledging and accommodating cultural backgrounds, languages, and individual learning styles.
  • Safety and Well-being: Ensure the safety and well-being of participants during program activities. Adhere to program policies and procedures for maintaining a secure and supportive environment.

Qualifications

  • Passion for education and a commitment to empowering youth through learning.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build effective relationships with students.
  • Knowledge or experience in university-level academics or teaching is preferred.
  • Patience and empathy to support students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Ability to motivate and encourage students in their educational journey.
