Welcome to a brand new episode of the Borderless Voices podcast, presented by the FCJ Refugee Centre.

Hi all, my name is Stefan, Youth & Access To Education Coordinator at FCJ Refugee Centre and I want to invite you register for an exciting semester of Uprooted U starting this Fall.

If this is your first time hearing of Uprooted U, let me give you a quick rundown of what it is and what to expect! Uprooted U (U being short for University) is one of the in-house access to education programs we offer under the Uprooted Series. The program is taught by volunteer instructors who have completed their post-secondary education in Canada with a focus on the topical area of the course being offered; and is designed to emulate the post-secondary experience for newcomers that are unable to avail the formal education options due to things such as immigration status, financial barriers, formal language testing certificates, etc.

Here are some things to know about the program – this time Uprooted U will be offered in four semesters, each semester going for 10 weeks over a 3 month period. The first semester has five classes – Foundations of 3D Modeling, General Social Sciences, Introduction to Canadian Criminal Justice, Smartphone Filmmaking Basics, and Intro to Socio-Legal Studies; you can find all program descriptions on the registration page through our website; and have the option of registering for a minimum of 3 classes and maximum of 5 classes this semester.

Some important dates to keep in mind are:

Last day to register: Monday, September 30, 2024 at 5PM; We have made allowance for an extended period to register up until the morning of Wednesday, October 2nd by 10AM latest.

The Mandatory Orientation: Wednesday, October 2, 2024; 11AM-12PM on zoom (link to follow registration)

First Day of Classes: Wednesday, October 9, 2024

If you are interested in the program or know someone who is, these are some eligibility requirements to keep in mind before you register. The program is unfortunately not accredited presently, meaning that it is purely educational and doesn’t have direct transferable credits; it is for newcomers regardless of status who are age 18+; it is completely virtual on zoom; it is designed to reflect the Ontario post-secondary system but students across Canada are welcome to attend. If you don’t meet the eligibility requirements and are from an equity seeking group and want to attend the classes, please get in-touch with the program coordinator at uprooted@fcjrefugeecentre.org

Thank you for your time and we hope to see you in class very soon! Bye for now.
