The goal of this Best Practices Toolkit is to share knowledge on service provision, identifying the systemic barriers faced by migrant women and proposing survivor-centred, survivor-led approaches to enhance support systems. Created by and for migrant women, this toolkit seeks to inform and guide service providers while also being accessible to the general public.
This Toolkit is designed to support service providers in delivering effective, survivor-centred assistance to individuals affected by international human trafficking and domestic violence, as well as those at risk of trafficking. It emphasizes approaches that recognize the complex and intersectional identities of survivors.
In 2016, the FCJ Youth Network produced a report assessing the secondary school system in Ontario on 5 salient areas: Getting In, Equitable Participation, Anti-Discrimination, Support, and Moving On.
This report was instrumental in setting the trajectory of several positive advancements in education access for folks with precarious immigration statuses.
Due to regressions observed in recent times, and by support and funding from Maytree, we worked on a more extensive version of the 2016 report card.
The new report is divided into two phases:
The report A Rocky Path: Understanding Access to Education Challenges for Newcomer Children & Youth, presented June 14, 2024, include the findings, conclusions and recommendations of Phase 1. Download the Phase 1 report here.
The report Building Pathways: Enhancing Access to Education Systems for Newcomer Children & Youth, presented February 21, 2025, include the findings, conclusions and recommendations of Phase 2. Download the Phase 2 report here:
Human trafficking is a complex and pressing issue that affects individuals globally, including right here in Ontario. This toolkit aims to raise awareness, provide vital information, and equip both youth and service providers with the tools necessary to prevent, identify, and respond to cases of human trafficking.
Understanding human trafficking in its various forms is essential for creating proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly migrant youth, who are often targeted by traffickers.
Canada relies on home care workers to provide essential support to individuals in need, including seniors and people with disabilities. Recognizing the growing demand for skilled caregivers and the challenges they face in securing stable immigration pathways, the Government of Canada has introduced the Home Care Worker Immigration Pilots. These pilot programs are designed to attract and retain qualified home care workers by offering streamlined pathways to permanent residence. In this presentation we talk about the eligibility criteria for this program, supporting documents needed, forms, etc.
On the other hand, since February 26, 2025, a new public policy in Canada has allowed apprentices in certain construction trades to study without a study permit if their training is part of their apprenticeship program. To address significant labor shortages affecting infrastructure projects, the Government of Canada has introduced this temporary public policy, enabling certain construction apprentices to complete their required training without needing a separate study permit. In this presentation you will learn who can apply and how to prove eligibility.

This study sheds light on the critical need to rethink support mechanisms for youth human trafficking survivors in Ontario.
The research contributes valuable insights to the ongoing discourse on survivor-centered approaches, providing empirical evidence to enhance both practice and policy, ultimately aiming to improve the well-being of youth survivors in Ontario’s urban landscape.
By embracing principles of empathy, flexibility, and inter-organizational collaboration, we can create a more supportive environment conducive to healing and empowerment.
